Atlas Workshops, the projects market section of Marrakech International Film Festival, has selected 28 projects for its eighth edition, including news works from Scandar Copti, Amjad Al Rasheed and Asmae El Moudir.

The festival also announced that Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, who won the Cannes Palme d’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days, has been named as patron of the workshops.

With a focus on Moroccan, Arab and African cinema, the line-up includes 12 projects in development from nine countries; 10 films shooting or in post-production from seven countries; five projects from Morocco in the Atlas Close-Ups section, and one Moroccan film nearing completion and seeking a festival premiere is in the Atlas Film Showcase section (see below for full line-up).

Marrakech film festival recently gathered all its industry activities under a new Atlas Programs umbrella, that includes Atlas Workshops, and a new event, Atlas Distribution Meetings, which brings together 60 distribution professionals from the Arab world, Africa and Europe. Over four days, participating distributors will be able to discover international films presented as part of the festival, as well as Arab and African films in post-production that are participating in the Atlas Workshops.

Atlas Programs also includes Atlas Station, launched in 2023, which provides 10 Moroccan directors and producers with support aimed at strengthening their skills and opening up their projects to international audiences. Starting in 2025, the programme is expanding to invite five Moroccan directors working on short films that are in the post-production stage.

Launched in 2024, Atlas Press seeks to strengthen the culture of film criticism in Morocco through two programmes. The first provides training for journalists working in Morocco, who benefit from an advanced workshop led by an expert in the field, while the second, designed for students, aims to inspire careers in journalism by training a new generation of critics.

This year’s Marrakech International Film Festival will be held November 28-December 6, while Atlas Workshops takes place November 30-December 4.
