Streamlined Guides: Asia Co-Production Funds Part One

Compared to a decade ago, Asian independent producers now have a much wider range of government-backed funds within the region to apply to, with several schemes aimed specifically at encouraging international co-productions. While these funds have transformed the independent production scene across Asia, resulting in many awards and festival recognition, most have also changed personnel and priorities in a short space of time, resulting in a landscape that is sometimes difficult for indie producers to navigate.

This report aims to present an objective overview of Asia’s co-production funds based on in-depth research conducted over the past four months, including interviews with producers and government agencies. It does not explore funding schemes created solely for domestic filmmakers, or production incentives and cash rebates aimed at inbound production, although these schemes are mentioned below, and the latter is being researched for an upcoming report.
