Streamlined Guides: Indonesia – Distributors, Exhibitors, Festivals & Streamers
Indonesia’s box office may not have yet returned to pre-pandemic levels of admissions, but it’s a market that is growing, thanks to cautious cinema construction and a boom in the popularity of local films, and has plenty of room for further expansion.
Admissions for 2024 are expected to reach 120 million by the end of the year, an increase of 5% compared to 114.5 million admissions in 2023, although a 20% decrease from 152 million in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The market currently has around 2,300 screens for a population of 280 million, so with more than 120,000 people per screen, Indonesia is way behind the per capita screen count of neigbouring markets such as Thailand and Malaysia.
At the time of writing, local productions accounted for the first seven titles in the year-end top ten, headed by comedy Agak Laen with 9.1 million admissions. Thai Oscar nominee How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is the biggest foreign title ranking at number eight with 3.5 million admissions, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the top Hollywood release ranking ninth with 3.3 million (see chart at the end of this report).
Indonesian films broke the all-time annual admissions record of 58 million back in September, and had reached 77.7 million by December 23, driven by a slew of end-of-year hits, including horror film Sorop and drama 2nd Miracle In Cell No. 7, a sequel to a 2022 hit based on a Korean film. Even before the release of these two titles, local productions looked set for a 67% market share in 2024.
