Part Two of the Streamlined Guide to Indonesia offers a deep dive into government support for the local creative industries, production services for inbound features and high-end series and the local post-production and VFX sector. As Indonesia had an election this February, and the new president was only inaugurated last month, it’s too early to say how film and streaming policy is shaking out, but the first section below explains the current state of affairs.

Indonesia does not have the same high profile as some of its neighbours in terms of inbound production and visual effects, but the country has huge potential in both areas, especially as the local industry is booming and producing bigger budget horror films, such as Dancing Village: The Curse Begins, which was filmed with Imax cameras, action films such as Timo Tjahjanto’s The Big 4 and The Shadow Strays and superhero movies through the Screenplay Bumilangit franchise including Gundala and Sri Asih. Other genres are also improving in this area, with LMN (formerly Lumine Studio) recently winning Best Visual Effects at Indonesia’s Citra Awards for Edwin’s atmospheric crime thriller Borderless Fog.
