Streamlined Guides: Indonesia - Overview, Studios & Producers
Indonesian films have already broken the all-time annual admissions record at the local box office this year, within just nine months, with horror comedy Agak Laen topping the box office and other local titles taking the next five places in the top ten. Meanwhile, Indonesian arthouse films continue to make waves on the international festival circuit, with Tumpal Tampubolon’s Crocodile Tears premiering in Toronto and Loeloe Hendra’s Tale Of The Land winning the FIPRESCI Prize in Busan.
While the Streamlined Guides to Vietnam and the Philippines were sprawling, and needed to be published in two parts, this Indonesia guide quickly became so epic that it will be published in three separate newsletters. Part One, below, provides an overview of local production and short profiles of the major producers, with some current box office statistics. Part Two will explore Indonesia’s new government, inbound production and VFX studios, while Part Three will look at distribution, exhibition, film festivals and streamers.
As always, these guides are completely funded by readers so the information in the report has been researched independently of any financial support from advertisers and/or film agencies.
