Taiwan’s Golden Horse FPP Unveils 48 Projects For Features Section
Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) has selected 48 projects for this year’s edition of its Features section, including 38 In Development Projects and 10 Works-in-Progress (WIP).
As previously announced, Golden Horse Film Project Promotion has also selected 11 projects for its Series section (see here for more details).
Works-in-Progress include thriller animation A Banquet For Hungry Ghosts, directed by Su Chun-Hsu and Spencer Ooi; A Ghost In The Market, directed by Chin Chia-hua (Trouble Girl), which reimagines a Taiwanese rural legend of female revenge; and Laha Mebow’s Sali Maku - Rock The Mountain, a family comedy about a young indigenous Taiwanese man who encounters his ancestral spirits.
The WIP line-up also features four documentaries, including Hong Shiouwen’s Dirty Roger, about a middle-aged motorcycle racer taking on Northern Ireland’s road-racing circuit.
In Development Projects include several dealing with female-centred narratives, family life, social issues and gender identity. Taiwanese-American TV host Janet Hsieh has turned to writing and directing with Menopause: The Ultimate Guide to Giving Zero F#&*s!, while Pixar storyboard artist Chang Yung-han is attached to direct The Wicked One, which re-examines a 1990s case centred on a wife’s killing of her husband.
Three Hong Kong filmmakers are also bringing projects to Golden Horse FPP: Philip Yung is adapting Her Version Of The Truth from the narrative journalism piece of the same name; Vincent Chui confronts the trauma of Hong Kongers living in exile in the aftermath of social movements in Reunion; and Pang Ho-cheung’s Echoes In Eternity looks back on the heartbreaking fate of young intellectuals lost to history in an era of revolution.
Several genre projects have also been selected for the In Development section, including Press Start, Prime Minister!, from Hung Tzu-hsuan (96 Minutes), about an esports showdown involving a Japanese prime minister; while Jimmy Hung, son of martial arts legend Sammo Hung, teams up with action choreographer Wu Jun-xi (The Bridge Curse: Ritual) to direct Once Upon A Time In Taiwan.
Projects from overseas include Becoming A Tree from Japan’s Akira Ikeda (Anatomy Of A Paperclip); Singaporean writer-director Huang Jun-xiang’s black comedy about the housing crisis, Build To Order; and Malaysian director Chong Keat-aun’s Blossom In Darkness, about comfort women in Malaysia during the Second World War.
Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) is taking place November 17-19 during Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (November 6-22). The 63rd Golden Horse Awards Ceremony is scheduled for November 22.
